Hello everyone
I recntly got into GAEA and Unreal Engine.
Sadly it seems my cpu is a bottle.
When I do a bit of heavy stuff it goes to 100% pretty fast.

anyone a recommended cpu to upgrade to for around 300 +/- 50

my system is:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K - 90%
GPU: AMD RX 5700-XT - 113.4%
SSD: Samsung 950 NVMe PCIe M.2 256GB - 235.1%
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB - 51.8%
HDD: WD Blue 2.5" 320GB (2010) - 17.2%
HDD: Seagate Momentus 5400.6 2.5" 500GB - 30.5%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666 C16 2x16GB - 75.4%
MBD: Asus Z170 PRO GAMING

Thank you and best wishes

B560 motherboard might just squeeze in. Z490/Z590 would be a little out of range.

Ideally also upgrade the memory to something faster.

Ryzen doesn't play well with slow memory, so that isn't an ideal option. And the 5600X is nearly $300 on its own.

I'm guessing your using userbenchmark.

Solution
Your i7-6700K has 8 threads and a passmark rating of 8977 with a single thread rating of 2532.
The best possible upgrade on your motherboard is a i7-7700K with 8 threads and a rating of 9708/2764. Not really worth it.
If you have not overclocked, you can do a fair amount better with your 6700K.

Otherwise, I suggest a current gen i5-11400F with 12 threads and a rating of 17873/3059. shop carefully, it is a popular chip.
Here is one for $175:

You will need a lga1200 motherboard.
The best chipsets for no overclocking are B560 based,
About $100-$110.
Here is one:

11400F will be perfectly happy with your current 2666 speed ram.
It competes with the big boys in gaming, here is a review:

11th gen doesn't work with LGA 1151.

7700K will max out his motherboard, and the performance gains aren't enough to justify the expense of buying one.

Just pointing out that lately it is somewhat variable what the current price of the 11400 will be, and the some of the earlier suggestions of a cheaper 10600K or even a more expensive 11600 are options.

I own a 7700k, been my workhorse for many years now, just recently retired.

Someone didn't read the whole comment.

I actually did read the whole comment, while yours was completely unnecessary. The OP said he was looking for a CPU upgrade, not a motherboard upgrade. That implies that he wanted a CPU suggestion for his existing motherboard. The assumption that he also wants to upgrade his motherboard, is not a logical one to make.

He gives a budget of up to $350 which is enough to upgrade cpu+motherboard so a valid option to give for a real upgrade.

Exactly, which makes such a suggestion the logical choice. Any new CPU, that works with their current motherboard, would be a total waste of money. I tend to not recommend sticking money into a dead platform, unless said upgrade is really cheap. Like say someone with a 2nd or 3rd gen i3/i5, needing a bit of a multithreaded boost, and can get an E3 1230/v2, off Ebay, for like $40.
