i am using i5 2400 with an gtx 1050 ti should i upgrade the cpu to an i7 3770

depends on what you are doing. Are you using this primarily for web browsing and watching YouTube, or gaming?

In that case, I would recommend getting a faster graphics card instead. Try the RTX 2060 if you can, or something less like the 1650

would an rtx 2060 bottleneck with i7 3770
i will enjoy a game if it is playable; i dont go to play AAA games at max settings in 1440p

Bottlenecks are actually very hard to come across. Most people think that its really easy to find, but unless the parts are on complete different ends of the spectrum, you won't experience a noticeable bottleneck in gaming. An i7 3770 is plenty good for a 2060.

I guess you could do that, I was suggesting that instead of upgrading the cpu you upgrade the gpu

oh , ok. In that case, then sure, go ahead. There are better cpus for the price of a 3770, but you would have to factor in the price of a new motherboard, which is pricey. So yeah, get the 3770

Try to see if your games are cpu limited or graphics limited.
Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.

You need to find out which.

To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

If you are graphics limited, the upgrade possible will be limited by your psu.
A GTX1050 requires minimal power like 300w and no aux psu power connectors,
Most good graphics upgrades are going to need 450w or more.

A i7-3770 or 3770K would be a decent upgrade.
You will get more threads and a stronger processor.
While a 3770K can not be overclocked on your motherboard, the K does come with a higher stock clock.
Such processors are selling for $100-$125 on ebay used.
