I've been looking into future upgrade options for my system, and I was hoping to get some feedback. I currently have an in9 32x max with an e4300 OC'd to 3.1GHz. I'm running Windows 7 64bit and primarily use my system for gaming. I won't be performing a major upgrade/overhaul for a while, but I was thinking of upgrading my cpu within the next 6 months or so, since I've been running off the e4300 for over three years now (I believe).
At first I thought I'd go with a q9550, but I've been reading that 45mn quads aren't very (if it all) compatible with the 680i chipset. I've heard great things about both the e8400 and e8500 dual cores, but I was thinking a quad might be more future-proof and help me get a longer life out of my system. From what I understand, quad wise, my best option would be to get a q6600 and then overclock.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Should I upgrade to another dual core or upgrade to a quad? While I think the quad would be more future-proof, I've heard that the 45mn CPUs run cooler, which would enable me to get a higher overclock.
