CPU Upgrade question - i5-4670K

Solution
Most cost-effective is overclocking your CPU, but you oppose it so strongly, get this upgrade, 8th Gen I7 will not perform much better than this:

It's still a great CPU, and even though you'd get more performance in some games I'm not sure it's worth the cost.

7th gen makes no sense even if you upgraded based on some of the 8th gen cost and performance (though I'd wait for cheaper motherboards around Q1 2018).

The graphics card matters for gaming more than a CPU upgrade so unless you have a GTX1080 or better I wouldn't spend money on the new parts which would require:

a) CPU
b) motherboard
c) new memory (i.e. 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz)
d) reinstall Windows, programs etc

It won't matter in the slightest for audio editing, but for video editing it's hard to say as programs vary a lot. There are MANY that will see minimal gains with a better CPU as the code isn't threaded enough for more than four cores. Some will, but you have to look at the EXACT program and what specifically you are doing (because some editing tasks are more threaded than others, or may utilize the graphics card).

This is obviously about OVERCLOCKING which I recommend if you've not done so. With a good cooler you probably can get 4.5GHz on all four cores at least (silicon lottery as every CPU is different, as is the motherboard/PSU power delivery)

The motherboard must support overclocking. I believe you need a "Z87" based board.

I use CPUID's HWMonitor to monitor the core temp (of any core) and aim for no more than 75degC whilst doing 100% video conversion in Handbrake (that's a realistic, worst-case scenario whereas Prime95 is far too stressful and not realistic).

You can verify CPU usage in Task Manager (may take a few minutes for CPU to start using 100%. Let run for at least 10 minutes to achieve thermal equilibrium, possibly LONGER if it's a liquid cooler).

I have 16(8x2 - PC3-10700 Dual channel) DRR3 on AsRock H97Pro4 & GTX 1070 mini. Cooled by 5 case fans, and CoolerMaster CPU fan(120mm) - no idea as for designation of it (sorry). Never tried liquid, cause of potato-hands of mine. As for software, I use PowerDirector 15, Adobe Audition and Vegas Pro.
I'm not in overclocking either - had Bad experience with it during Athlon XP era and recently with my ex-GPU HD7970(had dead fans due to overload) & ex-MB Asus P8(audio-board, SPID\USBs and some SATAs gone dead).
