Hey everyone! I’m looking to upgrade my CPU soon. I currently am running the Ryzen 5 5600x. I don’t wanna move to the AM5 Mobo yet so I’m looking for the best AM4 cpu. I mostly game on my rig but I also record music and produce music on the side. But nothing too intensive. From what I've read the Ryzen 7 5800 X3D and the Ryzen 9 5950x are the solid choices for AM4. The 5800X3D being good for gaming and the 5950X being good for heavy workloads and windows but not as beefy as the X3D on the games. Just curious what knowledge and opinions can be offered on these forums. If any more info is needed I can offer that.

Is this in conjunction with other 'new' parts?

Please keep this new build to one thread. Choice of Part A may depend on Part B, and Use Case X.
Parts are not chosen in isolation.

Not exactly. I just want a better cpu and psu everything else is good in my rig. I have a MSI x570 gaming plus and a 4070ti just looking for a beefier AM4 CPU to have minimal bottleneck.

Well you have the two choices before you. Which type of use do you want to prioritize?
It’s hard to say haha, the price isn’t really an issue just more so the specs. I’m leaning more toward the 5800X3D. Cause I game quite a bit and I’ve read that chip helps tremendously with the 1% lows on FPS. Which is generally when I notice any dips. But then I’ve read that the 5950x excels everywhere other than gaming when matched up against the 5800X3D.

So would a regular 5700X, 5800, or 5800X they have the same or higher clock speeds than the 5800X3D. 5950X has the highest out of the box clock speeds and double the cores. But it is a dual CCD solution, so anything that exceeds 8 cores and is latency dependent can be slowed down by having to transfer from one CCD to the other.

Not just lows though, X3D chips are often at the top of the charts for some games, even the 5800X3D can beat out 13th gen i9, but not always. Those Intel chips still have a huge clock speed advantage that can really show up an X3D chip when the extra cache has little or no impact.

Your 5600x is a very good chip and your AM4 upgrade options may not be as good as you think.
The 5600X has 12 processing threads and a passmark rating of 22156. That is when all 12 threads are fully busy.
Not a common thing when gaming, possibly excepting multiplayer.
More useful for multithreaded batch apps.
The single thread rating is 3382. Single thread performance is most important for gaming.
By comparison, the 5950x has 32 threads and a rating of 45859 and a single thread rating of 3465.
A good boost for batch, but not much help for gaming .
That is why the x3d processors were designed. They go all out on single thread performance at the expense of all else.
5800X3d has 16 threads and a rating of 27533/3120. The single thread 3120 rating is not what you would see in games, it will be better than that.

For better processor performance, you should look toward the next gen AM5 processors or their intel 14th gen equivalents.

All good info, thank you everyone. Since I don’t want to do am5 yet I guess I’ll stick with my 5600x until it becomes sub par. I just really don’t want to deal with a new mobo and all the junk that comes along with it. Unless i absolutely have to.
