CPU Upgrade Results in Poor Performance

I just upgraded my CPU from an Intel Pentium G850 Sandy Bridge 2.9GHz to a Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz (in order to do so I had to update the BIOS of my motherboard, see specs below) and when I try to play games that ran OK on the pentium processor they run much worse (stutter, lag, freeze) on the i7. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Motherboad: GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
GPU: EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti

The core speed hovers around 1600 MHz and occasionally jumps to 2200 MHz and sometimes 3800MHz.

3800? That's interesting, it's higher than your base clock. Go into your bios and turn off all power saving options, that may fix it.

I ended up running OCCT to better diagnose what the problem could be, and the temperature of my CPU cores was at about 90C (ouch). It turns out that my fan was not properly mounted, so I cleaned off the old thermal paste, reapplied it, and made sure the fan was mounted properly. Now it runs amazingly.
