Taken from Speccy:

CPU = Intel Core i5 4200U @ 1.60GHz
Haswell ULT 22nm Technology

Motherboard = TOSHIBA ZEMAA (SOCKET 0)

In a Toshiba Laptop.

Can I upgrade the CPU to an i7? The Toshiba site was useless. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Eric

1, MAYBE, but it would probably be a PITA and you would definitely void any warranty.

2, the U series aren't anything really like the desktop series processors;

i5 4200U - 2 cores, 4 threads. 1.6ghz - ~2.3ghz

17 4578U - 2 cores, 4 threads. 3ghz - ~3.4ghz

So whilst you're gaining clock speed, you aren't getting any more threads, so there will be a performance limit.

3, I don't know where you'll get an i7 4578U without purchasing another laptop to salvage.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

You quote the 17 4578U - I assume that is a compatible CPU?

My need for this upgrade is to increase threads for computational modelling purposes. So, does that mean I'd be better with a quad core x 2 threads CPU and clock speed is neither here nor there? If so, I'm looking at a new machine and the question becomes one of speed vs cores/threads?

I know NOTHING about computational modelling, but a quick google search suggested that it is mostly single threaded application.

So you might actually be okay with the i7 4578U.

That processor is on the same socket type - BGA1168
I presume it's the fastest one as it has the highest clock count. I would assume you would need some form of BIOS update, but that is just a guess.
