I have an R522 Samsung laptop and i want change my cpu . I currently have a core 2 duo T4200 installed . I was wondering if i cant upgrade from my current core 2 duo to a core 2 quad q9100 . Both cpu's run on PGA478 socket but there are some differences

T4200 specs :

http://ark.intel.com/products/37251/Intel-Pentium-Processor-T4200-(1M-Cache-2_00-GHz-800-MHz-FSB)

Q9100 specs :

http://ark.intel.com/products/37033/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9100-(12M-Cache-2_26-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB)

So would i be able to upgrade to a quad core ?

if youre outside of the warranty range and feel comfortable with taking the laptop apart and maybe having to eat the cost of the cpu then do it. worse case scenario you have to buy a 500 dollar laptop thats faster then what you have now.

Apart from ultra-thin where there is no height clearance for a socket, most mobile CPUs are still socketed.

However, laptop BIOSes have very narrow CPU support so there is a very high probability that the BIOS will not correctly detect the CPU and refuse to boot even if the motherboard is physically and electrically capable of handling it.
