Hello !
Last month i bought a GTX 1080 from a stock clearence promo , upgrading from a 1060 3GB, but i feel that my CPU cannot handle it anymore in games ; last night i played Metro Exodus , with high preset, @ 1080p and my CPU constantly hangs at 99-100%, causing massive frame drops sometimes ( going from 70 to 11 FPS for a split sec ), so i guess i have to upgrade it .
My current system is : Core i5 6400, 16 GB DDR4 @ 2400 MHZ, 256 GB intel SSD + 2 TB HDD, GTX 1080, PSU Super Flower Golden King 550W, platinum cert .
Looking though the possible upgrades, i was thinking to go for a 2600x, but for now, I will keep my current RAM - i know ryzen loves high freq. memory, but i'm on a tight budget ; For the MB, i chose something very basic - not planning any OC at all; anyways, here is my whishlist :

What do you think about it ? I mainly use the PC for light surfing, movies and from time to time gaming @ 1080p (aiming for max 75 FPS, due to my 75HZ panel ) ? Thanks!

Personally do i not think that the 9600KF is worth he money over the 9400f if not using a "Z390"motherboard,although it has a higher turbo speed so is faster.

The Ryzen 2700X is a good cpu,the 3600 is usually faster for gaming though.

If you have the money go for the 3600. Looked abit on that site and the Ryzen 2600X (not that much more than the 2600) is also a good option and probably to prefer over the 2700X for the price.

Finding it hard to guess how much you really want to spend. And all options are good performers in their own right.

Gaming on 1080p or less is more dependent on CPU so you are right, you need a better CPU.
I would suggest R5 3600 and https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-TOMAHAWK-MAX for longer term usability.

Well, looks nice, but gets way over my current budget..
I don't know if i can actually settle for :

You can sure settle for that.

However, if you're on a budget, since your platform is not that old, you can still get a used i7-6xxx / i7-7xxx and put it into your motherboard as it is. Those i7s have HT (4 cores but 8 threads), and new games tend to utilize threads more, so it would probably fix your problems.

If you're OK to make the platform change, the Ryzen 3600 really is the way to go. It did improve on Zen+ (2nd gen Ryzen) quite a lot in gaming performance.

Have the i5 9400f ,but don't game that much that i can really say what is the best choice for you. If the lower budget is that important for you is it not a bad choice though. But could look at the lates Ryzen 1600 as well. There are a few reviews about that one,is based on the architecture of the Ryzen 2600,

ryzen 1600 af review - Google zoeken

You however need to make sure you get the Ryzen 1600 with the partnr,

"YD1600BBAFBOX "

Not the one that says AE

Speaking of intel, today there is an interesting deal for a core i5 9600KF, for 190$; my only concern is for future proofing since is just a 6 core CPU, with no HT.
LE : for the same price, there is also a deal for a ryzen 7 2700x
