Cores would be the big upgrade. There is basically no difference between the 3300 and 2600. The 2600 is clocked a bit higher, and the 3300 is based on Ryzen 2 which is ~10% faster than Ryzen 1 found in the 1xxx and 2xxx CPUs. But the 2700 would have more cores so in some work loads it would be faster. Or could do more work loads at the same time.

What is a 3300G? could he mean a 3300U? isn't that mobile?

I wasn't sure what it was either, but I found it during my web search.

https://www.techradar.com/news/amd-ryzen-3rd-generation

  • AMD Ryzen 9 3950X: $749 (about £590, AU$1,080)
  • AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: $499 (about £390, AU$720)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X: $399 (about £310, AU$580)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: $329 (about £260, AU$480)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X: $249 (about £200, AU$360)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600: $199 (about £160, AU$290)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G: $149 (£139, AU$240)
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3300G: $99 (£94, AU$144)
As I said above it's basically a 2600 with onboard Navi graphics. The biggest difference is the 2600 is clocked 200MHz faster, while the 3300 is based on Ryzen 2.0 tech. So each core is ~10% faster than the 2600. Rather impressive chip for ~$100.

If you indeed have the very hard to find, rare Ryzen 3 3300. Then you don't have to upgrade. It's a great chip with the RX 580.

I'm assuming, it's a Zen 2 (Ryzen 3rd Gen) 6 core 6 threaded part, with a frequency above 3.2ghz?

However, if you meant the 3200G, which is a quad core part, then going to a 2600, 2700X would be better. Though if possible, i'd opt for a Ryzen 5 3600 which is the best for gaming.
