I just noticed while playing Witcher 3 my cpu hit a max of 99 but was around 80ish give or take most of the time. Is this normal for Witcher 3?

I have following specs:

i-7 4790k 4.0 ghz
gtx 980ti sc+
16gb ddr3 ram 1600mhz
coolermaster hyper 212 evo
850w psu evga supernova

And while I have you guys, is it normal to have occasional drops to 40-45ish fps when walking up second floors in houses in Witcher 3? Everything is maxed out but I feel it should be steady 60fps no matter what with 980ti. Thanks

You aren't going to get a steady 60 FPS on any graphics card right now with the witcher 3 maxed out. It's a very demanding game.

Those temps are not normal at all. A few more degrees and your PC will start shutting off to protect itself. There's gotta be something wrong with your heatsink. You need to make sure that thermal paste is applied correctly, the heatsink is mounted correctly, and that the fan is spinning during operation.

The Witcher 3 isn't very demanding on the CPU and if you run a program that actually stresses it you could very likely damage it from high temps.

I chose this as best answer but I noticed you might have mis understood me. These are my temps....GPU around 65 degrees, and CPU around 50-60 degrees during load. I was concerned that I saw a MAX of 99% CPU USAGE on msi afterburner, but after further inspection I had put the on screen display on and noticed mostly the CPU usage ranged from 40-92 and only stayed at 92 for a second. This is normal I assume?

to sum up it was around 50-60 degrees for CPU under load
60-66 degrees GPU under load
99% GPU usage
40-92 CPU usage

The reason I ask is I thought that a cpu shouldnt reach that high during games.

The CPU should never reach that high even if it's only for a split second. Do what I advised above and see if that helps. I'll re-iterate what I said earlier, if your CPU is spiking to 92 during games this can be a serious issue when doing something that actually puts stress on the CPU.

If what I'd advised earlier doesn't help it's possible that the CPU is defective. Make sure that you are using multiple programs to get the CPU temps as well. RealTemp is a very good program that is widely recommended for reliable temps.

you do realize my temps never spike that high? its just the usage that spikes that high occasionally during parts of the game

Yeap, was misreading.

Yes, that CPU usage is fine. It would only be a problem if you were reaching 95% or more. i7 CPUs have pretty good utilization thanks to hyper-threading. You can overclock that CPU when games start demanding more of your CPU so you should be fine for a long time.

ok thanks i was worried because on msi afterburner it showed that the cpu had reached a usage of 99% but when i started the game again with on screen display I didnt see it go that high so idk when it reached 99% usage

Sometimes monitoring programs will just spike like that at startup or if the system itself lags a bit. It's nothing ot be worried about especially it the CPU usage isn't staying at 99%.
