i just put together my system and i find windows2000 to be running really slow!!
i have:
-fujitzu 30gig ata100
-p3 800eb processor
-intel 815e chipset board(front bus speed at 133)
-128mb pc100 ram<----is this my problem?
-geforce2 mx card(32mb)
it shouldnt run slow right?????? so i used sisoftsandra to benchmark my cpu and it tests fine but it gives me a warning saying "CPU utiliztion too high. close all apps"
but i have nothing else running. what is wrong with my system? please help HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEE

I am almost sure your having the same problem I had. Win2k is not working correctly with your ata100 drive. Win2k ran my wd400bb ata100 drive in pio mode (thus the high cpu utilization) and my 1gig tbird system ran like a 486!! Until ms comes out with sp2, there are two ways to fix your problem.

1. Connect the drive to an ata66 controller. (easiest)
2. Change the drive to ata66. I had to do this because my mb doesn't have an ata66 controller, just the ata100. Wd included a floppy with my hd that allowed me to switch the drive to ata66 mode.

My systems runs great now and the speed loss in negligible from ata100 to ata66 as todays IDE drives max out at around 40mb/s sustained read. It's just during burst transfers that the ata100 will be faster.

I'm using an Ultra ATA100 card in my 200 machine with no problems.

I'd still look at the memory as well. 128 is pretty light for 2000 by the time you gete an app or two running. I've probably gone a bit the other way (have 3 x 256MB PC133) in my system - but I do some pretty heavy imaging processing and printing that really chews it up and spits it out. Really ought to buy a MAC for that one day.

Good luck with both options,

Peter.

I've heard of people getting ata100 to work with win2k, but then again plenty have not. I agree that he needs more ram, and now is the perfect time to buy some. LilC, sell your PC100 to a friend for $20 and pick up 256mb of name brand PC133 CAS2 ram for $120!!

128 ram is plenty for a work station, unless you do CAD, CAM or video editing. I run 3 Win2k Pro machines in my home. One is a 200mhz cyrix with 96 ram, a Celeron 500 with 160 ram, and an AMD K6-2 400 with 128 ram with no problems. I run several apps at the same time and they do very well. As a server or high end workstations, 256 ram is recommended.

ATA 100 is not a compatible standard with Win2k. Set the drives to ATA66. It is rumored that ATA100 will be addressed in SP2 of Win2k. You should notice a big performance jump.

Also, reset page file to the same min/max setting. Resizing of the page file size slows down Win2k.

Finally, my main machine at home is a Celeron 500, 160 ram, 16mb video ram, 13.5 gig IDE hdd, and scsi 4.5 hdd with scsi cd reader, scsi cd-rw, scsi tape backup, USB scanner. My system is fast and very stable. NTFS is the file system on the primary hdd, and FAT32 is the file system on the secondary hdd, scsi (data drive).

I got a Abit SE6 815e board and use ATA 100 with a Maxtor. I have never had this type of problem. What version of Intel drivers are you using, im using 6.00.007? And did you do the INF update before installing anything else? If not then this is probably causing your problems.

A mime is a great this to waste!

Check all your services, and the runonce entries in the registry. I usually shut down all kinds of stuff which I will never use in my lifetime. Also, turn on the dma in the device manager.
If you want to do some tweaking the easy way, check around for xteq x-setup 5.7. It's available at download.com.
