cpu with turbo boost overheating

I bought a prebuilt pc for christmas and the cpu was already overclocked to 4 ghz and today it has overheated when the asus uefi bios came up i just saved and exited without touching anything was there anything i should have done differently?

PC specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB
RAM: G.SKILL Value DDR4 2400 C15 2x8GB
MBD: Asus H110M-PLUS

I suggest saving ur current oc settings if the oc is stable and then reset bios defaults (stock clock speeds etc.) and run it at stock until you find a cooler that can keep your cpu cool.

You have the 7700 or the 7700K? Because you wrote 7700 and that one doesn't OC. And you have an OC to 4GHz? Even the 7700 boosts to 4.2GHz. What exactly do you have?

Intel Core i7-7700 was OC'd ? as far as i know non-K is not OC-able. You either have bad paste or dust builded up. clean up, remove cooler buy new paste like thermal grizzly crio and use it to mount.

My base cpu speed is 3.6 ghz but i get 4 ghz while playing games is it an inaccuracy?

its not overclock its "turbo boost" its a feature that will up the clock if you need more and CPU can give you more.
OC is when you move base clock around.

Thank you for the help i will try to lower the max it can turbo boost to then

Why would you lower the boost? What makes you think its overheating? How hot is it getting? Did you clean the sink/fan?
