I wrote a detailed thread question last night but It never published. I am at work and going to give as much information as I remember (I do not have the numbers in front of me)

I have an I5=3570k and it will not overclock past 4.2ghz no matter what kind of voltage I give to it. The pc crashes and the bios freezes when I enter it. I have to reset the bios in order to boot up again.

At 4.2ghz my cpu idles at 36-39 degrees C. With a voltage of 1.195

When idling the frequency changes to around 1600 mhz and a voltage of 1.016 (can't remember exactly).

When testing all cores (using prime 95) the cpu pushes to the 4.2ghz mark and pushes voltage to 1.2++++ somthing. When under stress the CPU can get up into the mid 70s for example when playing Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai for a few hours.

I am wondering why the cpu will not over clock past 4.2 no matter what voltage I give it. Could it just be a "bad" overclocking chip.

These are my specs:

Case: Cougar Spike matx
Mobo: Gigabyte Ga-Z77MX-D3H
OS: Windows7
CPU: I5-3570k OC-4.0ghz
GPU: Gygabyte 660
HDD: 1tb WD Black 7200rmp+300gb WD Velociraptor 10000rpm
RAM: 8gb 2x4 Team Vulcan @1600 mhz PSU: Corsair
CX 600w Watt Cooling: Hyper 212 Evo+COUGAR CF-V12H Vortex
Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing (Fluid)+ Kingwin 120mm
Keyboard: Logitech MK520

It is stable at an OC of 4.2ghz but anything beyond that it is not stable no matter what I seem to change.

My CPU As it sits is at 4.3 (could go higher but haven't had much time). voltage at 1.170. And i have the same chip.

All CPUs are different on a small scale, but you not being able to get above that seems a little strange. Are you doing all the Overclocking manually or using automated programs? even mid 70s while just gaming seems a little high. Mine barely hit 70 in prime.

I'm not experienced enough with overclocking to suggest anything specific. :(

I do it manually via the BIOS. and for reference right now I am playing toms raider and my CPU is in the 40s. I honestly might have mistakenly remembered that hitting mid 70s was during game when It may have been during intel burn test. My memory has left me the past month.

Prime tests show the absolute worst case scenario anyways. No game is going to use 100% of all cores for an hour straight (as prime does).
The only purpose of the test is to ensure it is stable. My chip runs at 70c in prime but never goes over 60c in-games.

I wouldn't worry so much about the temps in prime compared to the stability of the OC

what cooler do you have? i run 4.5. vcore 1.192-1.208 at load. in prime (blend) it tops out at 79c, 75c (largefft). and in planetside 2 after 3 hours it tops out at 68c. this is with a cm hyper 212. 68c is well within my comfort level, but less heat is always nice.

No problem blackhawk, I didnt even get a chance to read it anyways lol.

Ok So I just got done attempting to OC again passed 4.2 and it failed. I attempted to overclock to 4.3 with a vcore of 1.25 and when I ran INtel burn test the pc crashed. Then I upped the vcore to 1.30 with a frequency of 4.3 and ran prime95 for about 5 mins and the pc crashed. So now I am back running on 4.2 with a vcore of 1.236 when all 4 cores are maxed using prime.

Ya just not sure if its worth it. And if it needs over three for 4.3 mhz then 4.4 or 4.4 seems out of the question really.
