I just built a new skylake (i5 6600k) system, and it was working decently for a couple of days before going nuts overnight last night. It was in standby when i went to sleep.
Today, first thing i see is the case LED's on (nzxt hue) and the cpu cooler and fans running (corsair h100i gtx), but computer will not wake up. I hard boot it. Nothing comes on except the cpu cooler and the fans on it, all attached to the CPU_FAN header. All other fans (3 others, all plugged into other mobo fan headers) dont do anything. So, I then unplug components one by one and try to boot (keyboard, mouse, ethernet, monitor. No change. I then unplug everything and try to manually jump cmos, by shorting the CLRTC pins for about 10 secs. then plug in, still no change, just the cpu cooler/fans working.
So, next I pull out the PSU (EVGA 850w G2 Supernova), and test that, although it seemed to be powering things appropriately. It passes the test with the fake-out shorted motherboard adapter, powered right up.
I'm a little at a loss what to try, I'm not super experienced with troubleshooting busted components (most have worked for me with no issues). Could it be bad RAM? Bad CPU? Bad Mobo? Unfortunately, i dont have other DDR4 ram around, or another z170 mobo.
I wanted to try one other test, i plugged another fan into the cpu_fan header for a brief startup, and that fan came on, but not the others.
Full disclosure, i did use ASUS' AI3 suite to put a 4.4 Ghz overclock on the CPU, but it was running stable with really low temps at load (~45 degrees C), for about 2 days on that, so I'm not sure what could have went wrong there.
Any help would be appreciated.
