CPU_FAN1 doesn't control CPU fan speed.

My CPU_FAN1 is not able control CPU fan speed (always at 100%) but PUMP_FAN1 is able to control the CPU fan speed, any reason on why? Both are 4 pin connection to the CPU fan. I've checked the BIOS and made sure Smart Fan control is on for both connections.

CPU Fan: Hyper TX3 EVO
MSI Z270 PC MATE
Intel i5-7600K
MSI Radeon RX 480
16GB DDR4
500GB Samsung Evo SSD
EVGA Supernova G2 650W

How each fan controls what it is connected to is determined in 1 of 2 ways

a) MoBo BIOS - Most current boards are capable of auto-detecting what type of fan is connected; if not, you may have to select the type. You also have to select a mode. CPU fans have a default minimum speed which is based upon the teeny fan that's on the Intel stock cooler. If you use an alternate 3rd part cooler, you need to change the default minimum speed from the default minimum speed to something appropriate for your cooler (say 600 rpm). Otherwise, it will believe you have the teeny intel stock cooler fan and keep it up at a high minimum speed which may even be higher than the max speed of your cooler's fan.

b) Mobo Software Utility - Same as above but much more sophisticated. Highly recommended.

I expect that you have not made the necessary BIOS or utility adjustment for the lower fan speed for your 3rd party cooler.

Yes, I went through everything in BIOS and the fan speed doesn't change at all for CPU_FAN1. I also just checked every 4 pin fan controller on motherboard (total: 6) and CPU_FAN1 is the only 1 that doesn't control CPU fan speed.

Again, you need to change the default minimum speed

Have you opened MSI Command Center at all ?

There is no option to do so.

Hi,

Try opening the BIOS going to Hardware monitor (it's on the right hand side in the centre) in your BIOS, within that category select CPU_FAN1 and set it to PWM mode, then you can drag the points on the graph to assign the CPU Fan speeds at certain CPU Temperatures.

You can also modify the System fans within this category should you need to.

There is no option to use any utility unless you install it first:

a) It came on your MoBo CD
b) You can download it from MSI web site

Is this your cooler ?

800 - 2800 RPM (PWM)

Please do the following:

7lvIyW4.jpg

a) Download / Install / Run MSI Command Center from the MSI web site
b) Go to the Fan section and select "CPU 1) and "Fan Tune". This will determine the characteristics of your fan. Right now it's probably assuming that you have the intel stock cooler as is shown in the image. Fan is at about 33% at 1844 rpm which tells you that full speed is around 5000. This is what you are seeing with your install and why the fan is spinning so fast
c) After the tuning is done, you should see a range about equal to the 800 - 2800 rpm.
d) You don't want to set minumim speed at the limit as if the reading sis few rpm off it might not start ... so let's go with 850 rpm and set the minimum speed at (850 / 2800) 30%.
e) Set the maximum speed (100%) at about 70C.
f) The middle is up to you but a shape as shown in the image is typical

Everything should now run the way you want it.
