Hey guys,

So I've recently decided to take on the challenge of building my own PC and have already come across a problem.

I purchased the Asus Maximus VIII Hero motherboard for a number of reasons, with one of the main being I want the build to support DDR4. I purchased a Intel Core i7-4790K and when trying to install it, quickly realized it wasn't going to fit. I did some research (should have looked closer before, I know) and found the motherboard was a LGA1151 and the CPU a LGA-1150.

I want to keep the board and get a new CPU but I would like to know which processor would be best.

I would also like to know if the ntel i7-5820K Extreme Hex Core CPU Processor if compatible with this motherboard.

Your expertise would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Solution

There is two sockets that can use DDR4: socket 1151 and socket 2011-3.
If you are getting socket 1151 motherboard, you will need to get a socket 1151 cpu. It does not have to be a 6000 series cpu. Some socket 1151 motherboard do accept DDR3/DDR3L only so check first before buying.

ahhh Ok I see. So with regards to motherboard's supporting DDR4, from what I have seen, they all seem to have the LGA1151 socket. Is that correct? If so I guess that would mean to get a DDR4 motherboard I would need the 6000 series?

Thanks
