I am planning to build a server for my personal use as a backup and personal cloud.

What spurred me to do this was my when 64GB flash drive broke after my laptop fell on it, causing the plug to disconnect from the rest of the unit. I had 4 textbooks and 2 semesters worth of class work stored on it, luckily i had most of it backed up.

So my question is for a basic server meant for a backup for my laptop and my flash drive that doubles as a cloud for homework and textbooks, could I get away with a single core processor or should i go with a dual, or more standard, quad core?

You are better served by getting an external HDD. A personal cloud server can easily run on old core 2 duo based machines. Get an old one for cheap from ebay instead of building a server from scratch which can be expensive ($400-$500). Look at these articles to better understand what to do.

Thanks for the info, my plan was to recycle older parts (like cpu ram and a case) things that don't wear out and are cheap. I just wanted to know what I could get away with, this will help alot.

A good plan and I am happy to help :)
