I know gaming depends a lot on GPU, but how much does CPU's play a part in gaming?

I have heard that open world games takes more from the CPU? Is this true?

Solution
Depends on the game.

Open world is a good example, the more individual characters, or space ships, or whatever that are totally autonomous out there the more of an impact it has on the CPU. Whereas instead you have a corridor fps game like Alien Isolation, it really only needs to process whats in the same set of rooms as you.

As a general rule MMOs use most CPU power. But there are other games aswell that use lots of CPU, like Crysis 3 or GTA V, RTS games, etc. Open world games are not often in that category. Most games dont use that much. A dual core will be enough for them. But if you want to play any kind of game, its always best to get the fastest CPU possible.

Thanks everyone for contributing, I understand it bit more now. I am getting an intel 4690K over my AMD 6300.

I got the amd 6300 after having a fx4100 and I have hardly seen a difference!
