Hi, I was wondering if my current build would be able to handle the new GTX 1070, especially the CPU. Here is my build:

Intel i5 6500 3.2ghz
g.skill ripjaw 8gb
msi z170a lga1151 gaming m3
crucial bx200 250gb
hitachi deskstar 1tb 7200 rpm
windows 10
corsair cx750
MSi gtx 1070 (when MSI releases their version)

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it, especially since this is my first build and im not sure enough if my CPU can support the 1070.

It's not a matter of what CPU will work best with a 1070, because CPU and GPU performance are largely independent. A CPU can deliver X frames in a game, and a GPU can deliver Y frames in a game, and whichever is lower will be your framerate. You can lower GPU settings to get more frames, but if your CPU can't deliver enough frames, there's not much you can do.

An i5 6500 will offer excellent performance in any game out there.

The only intel cpus that are not compatible with that card are the very first generation pcie 1.0. Nvidia is compatible with any from today backwards to pcie 1.1. Amd is only compatible backwards to pcie 2.3. Pcie 2.2 and earlier had a different power delivery system. So while compatible, the problem with those ancient cpus is the gpu far surpasses them in performance, so it'll never live up to its potential, the cpu reaching 100% or close usage long before the gpu even gets warm.

So yes, the gtx1070 is easily compatible with an i5 6500

Thanks for the response, i do appreciate it. But i thought that the 1070 was supposed to have lower power consumption than a 970 (Which is currently my alternative)? Or is there something im missing. (Again sorry for not knowing, I'm a new PC builder.)

If you read my post I clearly stated that your power supply is low quality. Meaning no matter how many watts it has, it can still explode or fry other components when stressed.

It is not a reliable unit. wattage has nothing to do with quality
