Hey everyone. This is gonna be a long text but I will try to explain it with as much detail as possible because I have not found the exact issue anywhere and I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this.
I got my first gaming build a few days ago. This was my first time building a PC so I'm basically a noob so bare with me. I put my PC together 4 days ago, tested it and everything was working fine, happy days. (At this point I had Win10 installed from my old build because I'm using the same HDD and didn't want to reinstall.) My headset was plugged into the front audio jack at the time and I didn't have any issues. Although my mic wasn't working the way it did with my old computer I didn't think much of it until the next day when I tried the audio jack on the back (both for mic and sound) and when I plugged them back into the front I started hearing this crackling static sound until the sound eventually died completely till the next day. This was 3 days ago on Thursday when my headset died all of a sudden (sound came from the left side only, also tried it with my phone and had the same issue so I figured it broke) so I tried it with different headphones but like I said the front port was dead so I plugged it into the back. So my mic was still plugged into the front jack and the headphones in the back. The same day the front mic jack died as well so now I was only using the ones at the back. I've been playing games the past days without any issues but on the 3rd day I was playing Rainbow 6 Siege when all of a sudden I heard a low "pop" sound mid-game and my volume just went significantly low. Like down to 10% low. So of course I check my volume everywhere but they are all bumped up to 100%!!! yet the headphone are very quiet and also the higher pitched sounds made a very loud crackling/static sound. I kept on playing then all of a sudden I hear that pop again and the sound is back to normal, it's loud and clear again. Few minutes pass, I hear that pop and my headphone goes quiet. This has been going on ever since but ONLY when I'm playing a game. This does not seem to have a pattern, it randomly starts 2-5-10 minutes into the game and lasts randomly 2-5-10 minutes and sometimes it happens multiple times but sometimes only once. Also I can't seem to figure out what's causing it, it feels pretty random to me.
UPDATE: After I wrote this I played some games when it happened again and this time the sound didn't even go back to normal.
Now at this point I'm just really confused so I tried my headset that died the other day and... It works again. Only difference is when I'm changing the volume on my headset with the volume wheel I can hear that crackling/static sound again. At this point my PC doesn't even recognize the mic nor the headphones if I plug them into the front jacks.
The issues where the headphone goes quiet only happens while I'm ingame, it's fine if I'm just browsing the internet or watching videos or whatever. Unplugging the headset and back in doesn't fix the problem. If I quit the game while the headset is quiet it still doesn't fix it but when that stops it doesn't happen again unless I go back into a game. Both my temps and FPS are completely fine so there is no performance loss that I have noticed, which makes me think that my motherboard is fine and there's something up with the audio jacks.
What I have tried so far:
-Tried it with the HDAudio cable connected and disconnected.
-Installed the latest Realtek Audio drivers
-Installed latest GPU drivers which updated the NVIDIA Audio drivers as well.
-Tried 3 different headphones
-Reinstalled Win10
-Disabled the automatic volume reduction by 50% or 80% under the communication tab in the sound settings
I have the MSI Z170A Krait Gaming 3x motherboard and the Phanteks Eclipse P400 case
I'm just really devastated. This was my first build and I was so hyped for MONTHS and now that it's here... I'm just really really really hoping that it's something I can fix and I don't have to send my mobo back.
Could a headset with a USB solve this problem? Cause I'm thinking that the jacks on my mobo are kill. Maybe updating the BIOS? Is there anything besides the HDAudio cable that I need to plug in for sound? Please someone tell me I don't have to send my motherboard in.
