Crafted/rare/runeword only char?

Hi,

I hope everybody had a nice Christmas and got some nice gifts. I'm still
waiting for my big present (30inch LCD-TV), but there's a small chance I'll
get it before New Year's Eve...

While thinking about what to do next in D2, I stumbled about the idea to
make a char that doesn't use any uniques or set items, only rare, crafted
or runeword items. As I have done lots of crafting, and collected most of
the rares I found in my ATMA stash, there's a wide range to pick from.

Necro and sorc seem to be too simple for this task, as they are quite item
independent. I'm leaning to another ThrowBarb, as I already have the
crafted axes he'll need. KingSlayer axe with Rhyme shield on switch for
Boss killing.

Biggest problem will be outfitting the merc - with a ThrowBarb, I'd go with
a Holy Freeze guy this time. Crafted Blood helm would give some life leech
and 5-10% deadly strike.

Any ideas? Is this even doable (with the target to beat the game in all
diffs?). For some of the tougher areas my Enchantress could give him a
boost..

Regards,

Oliver

I've named the maximum, so rare/crafted would include normal items. I
plan to start a SP char with the -act5 trick, so he'd be level 33 and my
archives should have enough stuff to equip him.

Thus, normal/magic stuff would soon be replaced with better items.

Only thing I wonder is if I should allow runewords or not? With no
runewords, there would be only minimal amounts of Crushing Blow and that
kind of stuff. And I don't think it's doable without...

Hmm... I always thought that runewords are a kind of homemade uniques,
whereas crafted items are more like rares. If you want to go the pure, halal
or kosher way, I'd say no runewords.

if I go with a ThrowBarb, he wouldn't have a chance w/o at least some
runewords. He could get a max of 10% Crushing Blow from Blood gloves and
another 10% Deadly Strike from a crafted helmet. And I think I have one or
two throwing axes with 5% chance to cast level 1 Amp Damage.
And I don't think Hell would be doable under these circumstances.

The blood helmet doesn't do CB, but deadly strike, according to my LoD
compendium (PC Games).

The only way to make up for this, would be hitting *very* fast, which
rules out some of the big damage weapons. Maybe using some dagger for CB
(heh, an assassain barb?), and then switching back to damage dealers,
might do it.

Ah, Information. A property, too valuable these days, to give it away,
just so, at no cost.

Try to play the game without atma and you will enjoy more and I can gurantee
you that you wont be able to find decent uniques and other items in one time
play normal to hell finished...

Cheers

ATMA LOL
