crafty error

Hi!

I am using crafty-19.19, OS fedora core 3 64 bit. 1 Gig(ECC
registered) RAM. 1.8 Mhz. MSI K8t master 2 motherboard. I have a 800
FSB.

I don't run any other processes but chess to try to eliminate any app
conflicts.

I am using about 100 Mg Hash. No opening book. Trying to keep it
simple as possible.

When I play a game... any opening... After a few moves (3) I hit "go"
to let the computer think. I get segmentation fault.

I logged on as myself w/limited privs. I logged on as root. I
telnetted to the PC. After a few moves I keep getting "segmentation
fault" and the program dies. I compiled the code w/fedoras c compiler.

Nothing special.

Has anyone had this type of problem? Any ideas what I could try doing
to resolve this?

I like to telnet to the PC, so I can play on my laptop anywhere in the
house. However telnet fails as mentioned above. AND it fails when I
am on the PC directly.

I really would appreciate any suggestion. There must be someone who
ran into this before. Else what should I change? Is Fedora core 3 64
the problem? Should I go to Mandrake? Anyone using the 64 bit
machine w/OS? What is the delta between what anyone has a working
model vs mine?

Please any thoughts are most appreciated.

Segfault is typically caused by a programming error or a hardware
problem. Have you tried memtest86? Can you compile big progmas like the
linux kernel - for example compile a kernel in a loop all night.

Update to ssh please. You'll make the world a little better place. ssh
is safer and more capable (easier with X, it can compress the
connection, it can tunnel unsecure protocols).

Red Hat - as many other distros - tend to make often large changes to the
vanilla versions and the kernel is practically a fork of the Vanilla
linux. I do not know what's the current status of RH gcc. Try command

gcc --version
