Question Crappy wifi extender or messed up router configuration

I have a $60 tp-link wifi extender that I couldn’t even get technical support to figure out why it’s only working half the time.

What’s happening is I have the extender successfully connected to my router, but apparently it’s only grabbing a correct IP address with my MacBook (192.xxx.xxx…etc) and with my other devices, iPad and iPhone, it’s connected to the extender, but it’s connecting with the wrong IP address (169.xxx.xxx…etc).

Is this a modem/router issue, or a crappy extender issue?

IP 169.xxx.xxx generally means it's not able to connect to the main DHCP at all.

Return that wifi extender and buy a powerline extender or Moca extender instead.
