I am having a problem with a computer I built for a friend. It's randomly restarting every time he plays a game for an extended period of time, I've tried all the troubleshooting steps I could think of and haven't come up with anything. I reinstalled all the drivers, made sure the temps were all good and preformed stress tests on the RAM, CPU and GPU and everything passed without error. However I noticed something weird on Hardware monitor, the CPU temp stays at 35 degrees at all times, but when running prime 95 I noticed the cores were all approaching 90 degrees, even though the base CPU temp stayed unchanged from 35. I thought originally it was power, so I got a new power supply and got a surge protector, and nothing changed. I reset the UEFI to default and made sure there were no overclocks in place, and nothing solved the problem. When the computer crashes, it goes to a black screen, all the lights turn off and the fans spin up to full speed. An event 41 Kernal-power failure is also appearing in the Windows event log. Hopefully someone here can help me figure out something to test or to try to fix the problem because I am out of ideas.

The computer is running Windows 10 pro, it has an Intel i5 4690k, 16gb of ram, an AMD R9 390, the new PSU is a 600w 80 plus EVGA unit, and it has an Asrock Extreme 3 Z97 motherboard.

Solution
Does it pass memtest? Try with a single stick of RAM, then a different stick of RAM, and see if it crashes with either.

I'd also try a few things such as using onboard video and trying to run some games, and see if it crashes without the 390. If so, you could try underclocking the CPU a bit and see if it stabilizes.

psu isnt powerful enough i recon the 390 is a 300w rated card if your overclocking etc the atx board itself will draw about 70w

id recomend putting more money into a better cpu peferably a gold rated 700w psu or 750w if your occing also what cpu cooler are you using

The previous PSU was an old 1000W and it still had the problem. I also have a system with the same PSU that has an 5820k and 390X and it runs just fine, no overclock on this system.

I'm using a hyper 212 evo on this build
