I've been researching a lot of graphics cards lately, having decided that I need to upgrade my system.

I'm currently running a 500W power supply, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152053)

with a 1GB sapphire card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102993)

I've been researching all of my possibilities, with a realistic price cap of 300-400, max 500. I've heard a lot of terrible things from the R9 390/290, many saying that it's a bitch to install, upkeep, and play with. Lots of black-screens, drivers failing all the time, and a sheer mass of Ram that's not properly used. But yet, everyone claims it's still the best.

Comparing this to the slightly less powerful competition, does it even compare? Is the lack of crashes and RAM better made up for in Nvidia's better drivers and optimization? I really want to upgrade soon, being as my card can barely play some modern games on low optimizations. Would it be even possible to safely upgrade, with the amount of difference between the two manufacturers? Is there anyone that actually owns the cards/is not a fanboy that can help me compare the two simply from a performance aspect?

Games (In order of most troubled, to least):
Space Engineers (lowest settings)
7 Days to Die (lowest settings)
Civ5 (Mid-Low settings)
Cities: Skylines (Mid Settings)
Dark Souls 2 (Unknown)
Dota 2 (Highest Settings)

RAM: 1 x G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT

MOBO: 1 x ASRock Z77 Extreme3 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Processor: i5 3570k processor 3.4 Ghz (not OC)

Case: NZXT Tempest 210 CS-NT-TEM-210-B Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Thanks.

What are you comparing? R 390/290 to a like a GTX 970? Because the 970 blows those out of the water....

For your needs and the rest of your rig you can go with of the two trees;

Nvidia Path - GTX 960/970/980 or earlier models such as GTX 660/760/770/780 Any of these will play your mentioned games on high settings at 1080p

AMD Path - R9 270/270x/280/280x/290/290x/ Fury/furyX, same as above.

Seeing how you're like me and play lot's of Civ and Dota and love that genre it seems, go with the GTX 960. It's the cheapest in the new GeForce line of cards and will run any of your mentioned games just fine.

I'm just looking to get the biggest bang for my 300/400 bucks without getting a crapshoot that will only last a year or so, like the card I have right now (I was pretty stupid with the buy) I also need a card that I'm not going to have to argue with, over and over. Which I've heard from the nvid 970 (Mechanical whining) and the r9 390/290 (drivers/black screens)

I'm not sure if you got my reply on the thread, I forgot to hit reply on your response. Would you please check it out?

I have had the GTX 970 for almost a year now and I absolutely love it, no problems with it at all.

Best purchase for your budget would be a GTX 970 or AMDs r9 390. They both cost about the same and trade blows in becnhmarks. It comes down to personal preference of manufacturer.

Who did you buy your 970 from? This link is a few months old, but check it out. http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-970-coil-whine/
