[crawl] Cards Questions

Playing a Nemelex Xobehite, I took an IDed deck of tricks and was using it
to train my evocations. I drew an out of place card (which I didn't know
could be in decks of tricks -- maybe I oughta stick to wands to train my
evocations) -- "You have drawn the Maze card!"

But I was levitating at the time; instead of winding up in a Labyrinth, I
was floating high above an entrance to a Labyrinth.

So I was shocked on several levels. Making a Labyrinth entrance to use
later could certainly be useful. The real question is: do Pandemonium and
Abyss cards work the same way? Could I just levitate and draw cards with
relative impunity?

Relative? No. Complete impunity.

If you are NOT wearing an amulet of controlled flight, and are currently
levitating, you will never be ``banished'' to pandemonium, the abyss or the
maze.

HTH.

I wonder what odd logic lies behind that. Assuming it isn't a bug of
some kind.

Never be banished by a deck of cards, right? Or will levitation
prevent banishment by spellcasters, too?

Oh God yes, it does. Thank you much.

Sounds uncannily like a bug of some kind. 🙂

I believe it does.

I'm not sure I believe this (bug?■) is actually the case for
Pandemonium and Abyss. The labyrinth has an upstairs leading out,
but I remember pressing '<' on some gate (this has happened more
than once) and it said 'you can't go up here', and I had to press
'>' to use it. Problem is, I don't remember which gate that was, but
if it's out of the Abyss, then the way in goes up, and levitation
won't help prevent that. Also, I'm not sure I wasn't levitating at
some time when being banished to Pandemonium/Abyss.

■ Makes no sense for the labyrinth, but it could be excused for
the other two by them being some 'netherworld' realms, and
levitating (but flying would have to, too) brings you closer to the
opposite. Or something like that.

I'll try to remember this the next time I'm facing an orcish
sorceror with a low-level character. Probably a bug, though.

Um, are you saying that it does banish you while levitating?
That would be a bug (as in the code does not do what it is expected to
do).
I understand others think the current behaviour is a bug. But it is easy
to fix anyway.

Hrm. Yes. Well, I agree on the basis that if it was meant as I was
arguing earlier then the amulet of controlled flight should actually *help*
the player (instead of forcing them into the portal as it does now).

Let's wait until someone who knows about what was actually meant comes
along.
