I finally got around to compiling Gavin Duggan's "Imps, draconians,
demons..." variant patch + the travel patch. The combined (gzipped)
patch and a Windows binary are available at:

Gavin Duggan's words on his variant:

The patch merging was a rush job, so problems in the diff and binary
are possible. Let me know if you find any.

[Link to binary, link to recent crawl-dev post summarizing the patch]

Thanks for the impetus to check out crawl-dev again. It's nice to see
that people with quite some clout in the matter are pushing to break
the icebergs blocking crawl development at the moment and for the first
time in a long time it looks like Something Might Really Be Done.

The comments on balance in the ongoing discussion are also interesting
to read. Unfortunately, none of those who call Crawl "hardly a paragon
of balance" or somesuch go into detail as to what they have in mind.
Personally, I'd say fighters, mages, fighter-mages and the
miscellaneous types are on fairly equal footing. Sure, a few combos are
extra-challenging and a few exceptionally easy, but frankly I see that
as a plus rather than a minus -- it's a much more pleasant solution to
the concept of difficulty levels than explicit difficulty levels would
be.

There are a few exceptions, though, cases where an entire playstyle .
Like pure or even semi-pure hunters. 🙂 It's one thing if not every
hunter combo (explicit combo or one developed during the game) works
well. It's another if almost the only way to win with a hunter is not
to "be" one.

And then there's the little matter of rods (if you're non-unlucky
enough to pick up a scroll of acquirement or two by the midgame).
You're right, they're overpowered. Deliciously so. They'll probably be
in my first win. 🙂 And then I'll set to work toning them down. 🙂))

(Not so) incidentally, I feel really selfish about constantly delaying
my bows patch work in order to actually win first. Originally I thought
it would be a matter of days or weeks... ;-)

What with the current discussion on crawl-dev, any patch to 4.0b26 may
become obsolete very quickly, at least for any purpose other than proof
of concept. Might be worth it for that purpose alone, though.
