First of all, thanks guys -- I've switched from Minotaur chaos knights
to troll berserkers and have increased my survival chance significantly.

My troll berserker got to see his first statue today.

He learned that [1] statues are evil and [2] its a bad thing to let
intelligence drop to 0. (#2 was assumed, but due to a harmful mutation,
reading the scroll of teleport took a turn longer then it should have.)

Alas, my spiffy troll berserker.

PS: Should I concentrate on stealth? Or continue being an unarmed,
dodging, fighting worshipper of Trog?

AFAICR (As far as i can recall) trolls have shite stealth skills...
keep with the unarmed, dodgine, fighting worshipper of Trog. *Never*
memorize/cast a spell when worshipping Trog (Just stay away from
books) yet ironically, trolls are the best earth elementalists. If you
find a very good mace-like "Better for the strong" weapon, use that.

Dont forget to wear dragon armor or troll leather armor by enchanting
a dragon/troll hide with a armor enchant scroll. Then, enchant those
armors to +9. 8D

As well, sheilds reduce the attack speed of your character and arn't
all that effective, but wear them if there're enchanted and you have
exp to waste. In the early game, always try to find items that you can
wear and are enchanted to compensate for your low AC. A dwarven cloak
(perferably enchanted) is ALWAYS a good thing to have, and is nearly
necessary for some areas (slime pit)

Theoretically the best troll setup would be:
Worshipping Trog/Okawaru
Dragon/Troll Leather armor (of whatever, if possible) +9
Dwarven Cloak (of whatever, if possible) +9
Unarmed or strength-reliant weapon (of whatever, if possible) +9,+9
Mutations to slow your metabolism or greater regeneration, control
teleport, increase AC/EV, and anything to increase STR/DEX, various
others.

You can do much better than this if you make your troll a spellcaster,
since he won't be wearing armor anyways. Armor can only be enchanted to
+5 if it's a body piece or +2 otherwise. Try something like:

Worship Elyvillon. (You can never have toomuch healing.)
Wear whatever is the best stuff you can find that has a low evasion penalty.
Use unarmed combat since it is both faster and more damaging than any
weapon for trolls.
Cast as many enchantment spells as possible, especially confusing touch.

At the beginning maybe, but later Troll will very likely wear some Dragon
Armor. Gaining magic skill with Troll over few levels is very hard IMO
(Spellcasting aptitude 200, most magic skills about 160).

This one is really nice and low level.

The worst possible in the game (250 aptitude, lowest stealth gain from
skill). That's why Gandalf easily found them. ;-)

No, they are below the average (120), while other races have Earth Magic
aptitude at 60,70 (Gnomes, Dwarves). Kind of fun to found out Trog attitude
to magic on your own. 🙂

Troll Leather Armor regeneration properties doesn't work for Trolls AFAIR,
and itself is poor (3AC, -1EV, heavy armour). Cloaks can be enchanted to +2
only. Concerning headgear: wizard caps and leather caps can be worn by
troll.
