[Crawl] Minotaur Chaos Knight Autopsy

I send another Xom-worshiping Minotaur Chaos Knight to his death today.

I seem to start out fine, but around level 7 or so, I start running into
stuff that ends up killing me.

Should I be shopping for better weapons or armour?

Should I be concentrating on different skills?

This current character had a heck of a problem with food. I found a
vampyric blade that seemed to increase my hunger problems, so I dropped
it, but still had the same problem. I kept having to dive deeper in the
mines to find food.

Around 3 levels down in the orcish mines, an iron golem took me out in
2 swings.

Advice? Suggestions? Help!

Thanks,

Jesse Meyer

So don't do that then. CK start out with really weak skills. If you like
minotaurs you might consider a fighter, gladiator or monk and chose your
god later.

So leave the big boys alone. Take the next stairs down und come back
when you are able to beat that OOD monster.

Minotaurs have much more fun with Str-based weapons (maces and axes), or
even unarmed combat (those horns give you an extra attack; use it).

> Missiles

heavy and useless. Take a bow or a blowgun instead.

IIRC Mi are bad with shields but good with armour. Remember that shields
slow down your attack rate.

> Should I be concentrating on different skills?

Yes (see above). Short blades are for the sneaky character types.

It will feed (and heal) you if you hit something. Just keep fighting.
With your ring of poison resistance you can eat almost anything that's
not rotten, so feed on kobolds and the like.

The mines are full of tasty orcs. What is your problem?

Although you were full of teleportation items?

When in doubt, run.

That was really bad luck. The only one I met (since having the
vanquished creatures dump) was in the Vaults. Next time you
encounter such an OOD monster, run.

AC/EV could have been a bit better.

> a - a +2,+2 short sword of speed

That doesn't seem too useful a weapon for a pure fighter. Better
look for something with a punch. If Xom plays a joke and supplies
you with a dagger at the beginning of the game, use that for carving
up meat, but find something else to fight with, like an axe, or if
you find one, a long blade (or a mace even). Definitely don't spend
any Exp. on Short Blades, that'll be no good in the long run. Hardly
does even with lots of Stealth and Stabbing, and a fighter in heavy
armour doesn't get stealthy...

> p - a +1 cloak of preservation (worn)

I want one of those!

(Sorry, got distracted.)

> + Level 12 Short Blades
> - Level 3 Long Blades

These two would really be better off reversed. A great sword is
neat.

> - Level 2 Unarmed Combat

I'd leave that turned on. The occasional headbutt does no harm, IMO
(except the enemy, of course).

> You are good at teleporting at will.

What does that do? Or rather, where's the exact difference to these?

You can control translocations.
You can teleport at will.
You can translocate small distances instantaneously.

You have teleport control.

Like it says.

Yes, I'd like to know the difference (of either or a combination of
some or whatever) to:

"You are good at teleporting at will."

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. That message simply means that you have two
levels of the 'you can teleport at will' mutation. Having more levels
means (a) a smaller chance that the mutation will be removed completely
by further mutations etc, (b) a smaller chance of failure when you
exercise that ability, and (c) if you get 3 levels of this mutation the
teleportation is instantaneous (no delay).

Can those levels be reached with items, too? Like 3 artifacts with
the teleport ability, or 1 mutation + 2 artifacts?
