the docs mention some side effects of necromancy, but I'm not seeing
them (aside from HP loss from "PAIN")

the game and docs also mention some protections from necromancy
(side?) effects: being a mummy, or having protection via kikugubadaqha
(etc.?)
I'm not seeing the difference (definitely not in HP loss from pain);
maybe I just haven't gotten the necromancers far enough to use the big
spells?

The protection from Kikubaaqudha comes into play if you miscast a
necromancy spell: necromantic miscasts can be quite nasty, especially
for high-level spells, and if you're a Kiku-worshipper then there's a
reasonable chance that the miscast effect will be avoided.

Some necromancy spells (and miscast effects) do things like disease you
or cause rotting: undead (including mummies) are immune to these
effects.
