This program bug is to the NE of me, where I wanted to step... I've
run into an unseeable (not invisible, because then I'd be able to
see it) smoke demon (or something) elsewhere in the game. What's
going on here?

(Not that I'd mind beating up a program bug, they seem to haunt me,
anyway. 😉 )

Restoring the game, it seems to be gone.

It's a buggy monster. In the abyss this normally has to do with
bugs in the shifting code, where a monster isn't properly cleared
or isn't properly linked when it gets shifted. They're never a
good thing.
