[Crawl] Zot trap a bit too much

My level 12 ogre-mage transmuter stepped into a Zot
trap at Lair: 6. He got contaminated with magical
energies, started to glow and gained 5 mutations
(dopey, armour fits poorly, space occasionally
distorts, clumsy, fast metabolism) until the glow
disappeared.

I think this is a bit too much. He already had the
mutations 'frail' and 'occasionally forget' which came
from failing a Blade Bands spell (which was at 'good'
level).

No cure mutation potions so far in the game. I need
4 more free levels for memorizing Alter Self...

That's supposed to be Blade Hands, of course.
I don't know what a Blade Bands spell would do...

I don't believe this. I posted the above right after
the glow disappeared. When I continued playing, I
immediately got yet another mutation (blurry vision)
due to the same glow.

I really think a Zot trap in the Lair shouldn't be
this bad.

That was considered a feature a while back.

Typically it's not... the thing is that Zot traps have one thing they
do: spell miscasts. That function is incredibly random and not very
easily controlable. This means that Zot traps occasionally give top
level miscast effects and other times you get away with little cantrips.
You got unlucky here (and typically don't notice the lucky breaks).
Zot traps being potentially very dangerous is one of the few incentives
in the game for getting Traps skill.

Well, I would have preferred some nice butterflies or
something :)

Blade traps motivate me too. This poor ogre-mage has only
3 levels of Traps so far... I really didn't expect to get
in trouble from Zot traps this early in the game.

If you step on it a few more times you might get them. It's not very
likely however, because the function gets passed some large numbers to try
and guarantee that the no-ops don't get used. Normally you get something
in the middle... a couple demons, becoming confused, maybe a cloud.
Looking at it you might have gotten the middle transmigration miscast...
it's remarkably nasty for that level (the miscast function hasn't really
been looked at in a long time... it's got poor control from the outside,
and no guarantee on the inside).

The way we protect against that currently is by guaranteeing that the
nastier traps are only created deeper in the dungeon. Zot traps are
rare and only possible past level 15 (and they're really rare there).
The catch is that the Lair is deceptive... it often starts fairly low
(depth 10-13), then goes very deep (another 10), all while not looking
to be as deep as the rest of the dungeon. It's quite possible that
about 1 in 12 traps near the bottom of the Lair could be a Zot trap,
which gives a pretty good chance that the Lair will have a least one.

Ouch.

Why not remove some other spells? (Not that your chances at casting
it successfully are any good, but spellpoints don't sound like a
hindrance, unless you have neither Sif Muna nor Selective Amnesia,
but you didn't mention looking for the latter as an alternative.)

Btw, I read about your comment on Blade traps, and wonder what bad
experiences you've had with them. I don't remember a single occasion
where it actually hit me. (Cue the Redirecting Naughty Gearbox
correcting that ASAP.)

I'd try out potions (or chunks) of mutation before, they are much more
frequent that cure mutation.

Which version are you playing? b26 (I think) had a bug which made
magical contamination *much* worse.

Why 'had'? Afaik it's still the newest version available...

It is, I suppose. I fixed the bug in the Linux copy I tend to run, but
haven't really thought about it otherwise.
