Creamy dual core goodness.

Ive seen some people say that dual core chips are only good for a limited number of multithreaded apps.
Video compiling, a few select games, and rendering.

There are advantages for the general enthusiast though, even if you dont have a single multithreaded application running.

Ive seen it named "creamy dual cpu/dual core goodness"

Take the example of my system from yesterday:
X2 3800+ (2Ghz), overclocked to a very stable 2.5Ghz.
What i had running was:
Two copies of Folding @ home running in the background.
Yahoo, MSN & Opera Webbrowser open.
Azureus Bittorrent running using around 75% of net bandwidth.
winamp playing "mood" mp3's.
Video decoder running an xvid -> dvd decompression.
and on top of that i was playing a First Person Shooter, with no lagging or stuttering.

Try doing that on a single core system :)

Anyone else here in love with that "creamy dual core feeling"

You win. What you were doing cant be done on a single core system.
Single core only allows one instance of F@H. (other than that, use task manager, and it's a done deal.)
Of course, using my old system, for everything else, and my s939 3200 @ 2.5 for gaming, Id bet I'd get better framerates, if I wasn't stuck with an old 9800pro. My old system is a 754 3200 @ 2.45, so it can deal with a lot of hubris, while I play on my newer setup.
It may be time to go pci-express, but I'll still buy single core for gaming.

WooHoo! I feel ya. I just got my Opty 175 running! Sweet! I haven't had duallies since my puter before last dual P3-550, which it lasted me 5 years! Dual core rocks! Those that praise single core have not seen the light!

I'm lovin it (no offence McDonalds). And I feel sorry for anyone that took this forums advice that single cores are still the best for gaming.

yeah duel core is great i tend to run

WMP on random with over 1000 songs
2 instances of F@H
Firefox
Word/excel
and play either CS:S, FEAR or Quake 4

with no slow down.

You just wait till you see an FX-57. Who uses their pc for more than one thing at a time anyway? I'm afraid to say you must all be girls 'cause personally i can't multitask so neither will my computer.

A dual core would be nice but c'mon you guys: 1 CPU that is as fast as 2.

I WANT ONE SO MUCH!

Anyone looking to buy a kidney?

single cores are still best for gaming cuz when it comes down to it, single cores just clock higher =D

until programers can make games that take advantage of dual cores, there is really no point of buying a dual core for gaming.

or until programmers code graphic drivers to take advantage of dual core . . . Wait, ATI has done that, and Quake 4 with patch 1.05 is multi-threaded too!
Oh well, good to have it as they become available to exploit and reap thy rewards!

"optimised" for dual core means at best 5fps increases in games. until programers can code their games so that they distribute the calculations to both cores and getting a humongous increase in fps, single cores are cheaper, better and OC higher.

I got a AMD 64 X2 4400+ processor hoping it would destroy single core performance. It sucked.

Then I decided it might be a good idea to install the CPU drivers (DOH!) I quickly changed my mind

Regarding Quake 1.0.5 patch benchmarks at FiringSquad
Talk about understatement of the year (or what’s left of it). While it isn’t optimized for AMD64, frame rates on a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 3800+ are 63 percent faster at 800x600 with threading enabled. The 4800+ also feeds back good gains.

The good news continues at 1280x1024, where 77.4 frames per second turn into 101.7 on the Athlon 64 3800+. AMD’s 4800+ gets a boost as well, while the Athlon 64 3800+ demonstrates that you can’t turn on SMP mode with a single-core processor.

Call of Duty 2 may soon be getting patched too, with others following...

I bought a 64 bit thinking that games might eventually use my processor. Oh, wait, there are about 3 of them... I only know that one of them is 64bit for sure, And how much half-life can you play, esp when your internet costs as much as mine does (i think south africa has the most expensive internet in the world) So when they finally get a 64 bit game going on a 64 bit windows that doesn't suck i might think i was wise, though i thing since everything seems to be widening, instead of moving faster Dual core is a better choice than 64, even though 64 feels more exclusive than dual core to me.
