I have a complete novice. I am trying to create a boot disc to retrieve lost info from old machine. I have downloaded a tool to create a boot disk which says to copy ISO file to USB, but I don't know what the image file is called or where to find it. Can anyone help?

Use the official microsoft tool, this will install windows 10,you can skip entering a serial number and it will run in "demo"mode with a watermark but full functionality.
You don't need to install windows 7 just because the original was windows 7,you can rescue all the files with win 10 or even with any ubuntu or linux installation.
If your disk was protected by bitlocker you won't be able to get your files no matter what you do unless you have saved the credentials.
