My new laptop is working perfectly right now with Windows 7.

I would like to clone my current Windows 7 install on a second partition and have this multi bootable.

Is this possible?

You can't use the same license for two installs. What exactly do you mean by 'multi bootable' ?

Dual booting - so I get an option on startup asking me if I want to use the backup copy:

Windows Boot Manager
--------------------
identifier {bootmgr}
device partition=C
description Windows Boot Manager

Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
identifier {current}
device partition=C

path Windowssystem32winload.exe
description Windows 7

Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
identifier {current}
device partition=D
path Windowssystem32winload.exe
description Windows 7 (backup)

-----------------------------------

As for the license, surely it pertains to my mobo? Wouldn't it be the same as reinstalling Windows?

I'm gonna try following this article and using disk management to copy the partition.

The licence doesn't just cover the motherboard, there are other restrictions too, one of which is that you can't use the same licence/product key to install a second copy of Windows unless you wipe the existing Windows first (or immediately afterwards). That's not the same as re-installing Windows at all.

When you reinstall Windows you overwrite the one that's screwed up, so you still end up with just one Windows installed, which is quite legal.
