creating shared folder/hard drive

I am working on a school project that involves a lot of solidworks files. Having multiple people working on the same files can cause issues. I was wondering if there is an easy way to make a spare hard drive a network drive so that when the first person opens a file it becomes read only for everyone else. Not everyone will be on the same network though. If there's a website that can do this great else Google drive/dropbox will have to do I guess.

Also a software approach is fine but I expect that to be part of the solution anyway.
