Hey everyone, after my 4890 has blown up, i am stuck between getting another 4890 or going for the dx11 xfx 5770, anyone know how good the 5770 will perform in crossfire? i know that it is going to way out perform the 4890, but i need to know if its going to foot the bill by the time dx11 becomes the standard. I mean most games wont be using directx 11 as standard for a while yet, but if crossfiring these cards performs amazingly! then i will definately go for one now, and one later! oh yeah, when im using crossfire my board runs the cards in pcie 8x will i lose a lot of performance over a single card running 16x? dont quite get that.
Cheers guys

problem there is i have store credit at ebuyer, they dont stock that card, and if they did, it is way more expensive than the 4890 that i have being repaired by them, i stupidly forgot to include that, sorry, yeah basically as the 4890 died, sent it to ebuyer, asked for a replacement, or refund then buy another card, so those are my options, as the card is giving me £145.77 to play with, i need a new card in the next few days, so cant afford to wait and get more cash as i have uni work to do, and need to video edit with the card!

Well in that case, I really don't know. The 5770 is a downgrade from an HD4890, though it has DX11. Your only bet is to get an HD5850, or similar.

Hm...

I guess the crossfire 5770 would be better. It's premature drivers might let it be as powerful as the 4890 crossfire, especially because the 5770 has some 80+% scaling.

A 5770 will not way out perform the 4890. The 4890 will outperform the 5770. A 5770 performs equal to a 4870, so a 4890 performs about 15-20% better than both. PCIe x8 is fine unless you're trying to run a 5870 or dual-GPU card on it.

i would love to wait man, but as i said i need the card in the next few days! right i think 5770 xfire it is then, would rather be a little futureproof! after seeing the bench results and the fact that duel 5770's will use around the same power as my old 4890! think i know what im choosing! cheers everyone :)

Did you crossfire the 5770 ? Just curiuos.. I have a similar setup and am somewhat dissapointed in its performance. I cant run age of conan on full settings without going into the teens on fps... Wonder if I got another and crossfire it would it help my situation...

i nevercrossfired yet! money got a bit tight, theres some awesome reviews on line though that are really helpful, my card with a phenom 2 964 and 4gig of ddr2 1066 crucial ballistix runs arma 2 at max settings with mid aa at around 25fps so crossfire should be interesting, im definately going there, hopefully sooner rather than later, tempted to go tri fire if im honest ;)

Yes get the 5770 no matter what these people are saying. Vapor x model from sapphire, if possible, because I never hear it. Currently mines in for RMA because I screwed up the card with bios, and it isn't recognized anymore to flash back, but for the few days I had it it rocked. Dragon Age Origins maxed at 1080p was somewhere around 40 fps. A lot of games have crashing issues right now because of the drivers but they will be updated and it's not THAT common. If possible get a 4870 x2 for ~the same price off ebay though, it's faster than crossfire 5770s.

5770:
Good-
Low, low, low power because it's 45nm (or 40, I forgot). One will run on a 380 watt PSU I bet. Crossfire on a 600 easily.
Pretty cool because it's smalller nm again.
Big, but not giant. Fits most cases.
DX 11 for future games in around 1-2 years.
Crossfire support, so you can get 2 of them for less than 5870 yet they out perform it.
Cheap... same price as a 4870 surprisingly?
Handles anything at 1080p maxed except Crysis. Warhead runs ok though!
Bad-
Still, it has 128 bit memory. It's GDDR5 which is good, but since it's mot 256-bit the memory bandwidth suffers a bit, making is a little worse than the 4870. Supposedly future games are less bandwidth dependent, but as of right now they're not.
A little bit of crashing with 9.2 drivers, but I guess 10.1 just came out and I haven't tried it. Perhaps flawless?

as i said I am happy

My 260 gtx used to drop into the 40fps barrier which i didnt like

oh and I am running the 2 on a 500w thermaltake psu

runs sweet

not sure what this means but with xfire enabled in 3dmark 06
i get
3DMark Score 15789
SM 2.0 Score 6269
SM 3.0 Score 7211
CPU Score 4656

with it disabled i get

16089 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 6347
SM 3.0 Score 7431
CPU Score 4688

so i dunno, no overclocks

its possible that your psu may be to small dude! i dont know if this would affect performance but that sounds really odd

Is CF5770 at 4x/4x better than a single one at x16? probably, since a single 5770 doesn't saturate an 8x slot, nevermind a x16, but the reality is that a x16/x4 motherboard should just be advertised as x4/x4 crossfire, since cf doesn't allow any member of the multi-cpu setup to do more work than another member. Thus, if the x4 is a limitation on one card (undoubtedly would be) it will be a limitation on both.

I heavily researched the issue as I bought a x16/x4 motherboard without truly understanding the nature of CF at the time, as the board was advertised as crossfire capable (not crossfire proficient, heh).

Let us know how it goes. If you can get 20k 3dmark06 with x4/x4 cf5770s, I am intrigued to see how a proper CF board will perform.

hi

didnt go 16 16 went 8 8 with an asus 79xtd evo, fps unchanged and 3d mark unchanged too, so looks like x16 x4 is just as good as x8 x8
well have fun !

Hmmph. Some more details would be nice (replicate the benchs you did before) because every detail about CF on x16/x4 on the web says the exact opposite. Is it possible a single 5770 really doesn't saturate a x4 PCI-E lane?

Do you have the same FPS as before or after you reseated the cards? The fact that reseating the cards fixed the problem on your old board means that this whole discussion was moot, hah.
