HELP!!!!!!

I just built a new system with a Asus Maximus V Extreme Thunderbolt Edition + i7 3770k (with HD 4000 iGPU) + two XFX 7970 in crossfire. (I have confirmed these two graphics cards work in crossfire in another build).

The main goal is to use my 27'' Apple Thunderbolt display to run BF3 @ 2560 x 1440. Obviously the crossfire 7970's will be needed in order to obtain this resolution on ultra (again, I confirmed these work on another build but only running at 1920 x 1080 since that mobo doesn't have TB).

CCC shows both cards are in crossfire mode and GPU-Z shows both cards plus the Intel HD 4000; however, when loading up BF3, I get TERRIBLE fram rates (10-20fps) and I'm guessing its because the system only is using the HD 4000.

I have tried using Virtu MVP but it causes the game to freeze at 'Logging in' about 70% of the time. Also, I updated it and the latest version is only giving me a 30 day trial (even though the MOBO came with a free version). I'd like to NOT use Virtu MVP and just use the 7970's but I have to use the Thunderbolt port because of my display.

I have the bios configured properly to even allow both cards to be seen and the iGPU to function for TB display to work (that took forever to tweak just right). Now I'm soooo close to getting this to work but can't/too tired to figure out why it won't work in crossfire mode now!!

*What can I do to accomplish my goal?

*Is there any other software besides Virtua MVP that I can use to make this work?

*Laptops have software for Switchable graphics which you tell the OS which .exe you want to use the dedicated graphics with. Is there a desktop version for this software?

With these setups like mine, I prefer to only install my dedicated video card drivers so these problems don't happen. The Intel part simply doesn't help very much so I don't bother installing those video drivers. I would suggest uninstalling the Intel drivers and just leave the AMD ones installed then BF3 should default to ONLY the 7970s. Hope this helps.

Ok I'll give that a try, but will uninstalling the Intel Drivers cause my video to not display on the 27'' thunderbolt display?

No it will not.
This might be a dumb question but I have to ask; you have the DVI/HDMI cable plugged into one of the 7970s and not the motherboard right?

If your video cable is plugged into your 7970s and not the integrated port on your motherboard, it should just default all video to your graphics card, assuming you have those proper drivers installed. There should be no issues from my experience. Even if you had no graphics card driver installed, Windows will have a default one to use so you can install a graphics driver. You shouldn't encounter any issues.

See thats the thing. The 7970's don't have Thunderbolt ports on them to run the 27'' monitor. Thats why I have to have the 27'' TB monitor hooked to the TB port on the mobo, which I'm assuming has to have the Intel HD 4000 driver to work. I'm uninstalling those drivers now so we'll see....

Yes I have a second monitor plugged into the DVI port on the 7970 just so I can see POST, but once windows loads, it pushes the video to the TB port on the MOBO

Ok. After a bit of research, these are my findings. To get your 1440p from your Thunderbolt display, the connection must be Thunderbolt--->Thunderbolt to get that 1440p resolution. You could get a Thunderbolt/Mini-display--->DVI adapter from Apple, BUT it only supports a maximum of 1080p resolution. Unless you can find another adapter that supports full 1440p resolution, you may be in a bit of a pickle. I wouldn't choose an Apple display for gaming anyways. Hope you can find another adapter :/

This pickle taste funny! I uninstalled the drivers for the HD 4000 and sure enough no video on TB display. I've been looking around for proper cables to do MDP to Thunderbolt and I'm not really seeing any besides this one from MonoPrice and I'm sure it won't really do what I need ( http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6904&seq=1&format=2#description)

Anyone want to buy a BRAND F*$& NEW 27'' Thunderbolt display?!! I guess maybe I should look at getting a 4K display if I'm going to upgrade. NVM, a quick search for 4K tv's shows the cheapest as being 4x more expensive than my 27'' TB display. =(

Surely there has to be some kind of software that can be used (just like in the laptops) to tell the OS to only use discrete graphics when certain programs are being used. I know TB is still slowly making its way to the PC side but the ability of the tech is fantastic if only they can get small problems like this worked out!!

Yeah sorry. There might be some software out there for that, but it is a relatively new technology so you might have to wait for it to appear on graphics cards. As for monitors, if I wasn't into 120hz gaming, I would look into buying one of those new 21:9 monitors. I'm waiting for a 120hz model. I may be waiting a while 🙁

Which monitor are you current using/would suggest? I would mind getting a 120hz monitor that does the resolution i'm looking for!
