Title says it all.

I have an R9 290, and I want to get the Asus R9 290x directcu ii card when it comes out in January.

can I crossfire the cards with the asus card as the primary card? Or do they have to both be R9 290x cards?

Solution
I haven't been able to find anything specific about this, as I don't think anyone has tried it. However considering how you have always been able to Crossfire two AMD cards as long as they are using the same core (Hawaii in this case), I would believe that you could do it. For example, you can Crossfire a 7970 with a 7950 or a 7870 XT because they all have a Tahiti GPU.

You COULD, but it wont be worth it. The 290x would be held back from its full power by the weakest link, the 290. Crossfire does not add performance, it increases, but not on a double/addition scale.
So it would be a waste of money. Get a second 290.

the 290x will not be held back, the array will balance out the cards, look at it this way just 2 r9 290s gives a 70-75% increase in performance. Just make sure you have a good psu id say around 800 watts, and good cooling, I have a great cooling system, so i overclock the/tune the r9 290 to match closely with the 290x and get great performance
my gpu is an AMD FX 8320 black edition 8 core, 12gb ddr3 ram 1600(speed really doesnt matter after 1333) msi afterburner gaming motherboard

Can you tell me your cooling method?
