CrossFire Internal ATI Interconnect?

I took a look at the compatibility grid:

I see that the "dot" is the "recommanded" but when in the red zone it's "Internal ATI CrossFireX Interconnect".

Does it mean it would work?

Yes, but the faster card will be held up by the slower one.

or the faster card will downclock.

Yes, it will work but not at full speed.
As the others have stated, the 4870 will slow down to match the 4850.
If you do attempt this, make sure and have the 4870 as the primary card and overclock the 4850 as far as possible.
