I was going to stay with my fx 6300 and get 1 r9 280x with 550watts but...

Would that be better or would my fx 6300 and get 2 r9 270Xs crossfire be better?

Solution
ehh, I'd stay away from crossfireX for two to three reasons:

1. CrossfireX has been known to have issues.
2. Your fx 6300 would bottleneck two gpus a lot.
3. Your PSU isn't powerful enough to drive CrossfireX.

I'd upgrade cpu to fx 8350 and sell the r9 280X for a r9 290X or higher.

Solution
The R9 270x isn't too far behind the R9 280x.

2 x R9 270x cards will be faster than a single R9 280x.

It is likely going to cost a similar amount to purchase a power supply and R9 270x together, than a single R9 280x.

CrossFire problems are grossly overrated. If your FX 6300 will bottleneck 2 GPUs, it will bottleneck a single GPU that is comparable to the two.

To CrossFire 2 x R9 270x graphics cards you will need 4 x 6-Pin PCI-e power connectors and it's recommended to have a 700 watt or higher PSU.
