My old April 1997 ADI MicroScan CRT monitor (which I just got off eBay today) works fine, other than that the screen's focus is bad and it makes weird sounds on powerup.

Now, I do know that all CRTs make a sound or two when you hit the power button, but in this case the sound is a bit different. It kinda sounds as if its gonna implode.

It does sound odd but unless you've grown up with them would I be worried. I have been on this planet for over 4 decades so I'm familiar with them. What about that G thing. D thing??? Degauss!!! That can help with the clarity. It probably displays at 640 x 480 so sharp isn't to be expected. When you do the degauss thing the picture will warp horribly for a moment and then clear up, hopefully.

Degaussing sounds like a good idea. However, it's maximum resolution is 1280x1024 (I think) and I had it set to the max resolution. I'm not going to degauss it myself, though, as I haven't grown up with them, nor have I ever had to open one up (whenever I've been directly in front of a screen, its been LCD) so... I'll probably have to scour the Internet or the Yellow Pages for someone who is experienced with CRTs.

I've read other threads on the internet about how you sometimes have to open the case of the monitor to get at the focus knob on the Flyback Transformer (because someone didn't think to put cutouts on the cases of CRT displays) and by doing that you're exposing yourself to high voltages.

P.S: I've seen manual degaussing on YouTube, and the picture does warp horribly. Hopefully, its one of those monitors which can be degaussed from the menu.

I've not seen a CRT consumer model without Degauss within its menu. I wouldn't suggest going inside of it because electrocution is a real possibility. Although it sounds like you've done your research and are aware of some more troubleshooting steps.

Please keep us updated.

OK. I'm thinking of chucking the thing, as its a back-breaker, and makes my desk bow in the middle. However, before I am sure that I'm going to chuck it, I'll try to find the time to search in the menu and find the degauss option. The noise seems like a slight crackling sound, which ususally means something is wrong with the HV SuckerPlug™ (my nickname for it). It could be something else, though. Looks like I'll be doing more research.

I'll keep you updated.

Okay, so, update!
Most important thing. It DOES NOT crackle. Thank god! I assume that all CRTs make slightly different noises.
Second thing. The control panel is WAY too complicated. I'd say there's at least 7 buttons. None of them are labeled 'Menu' and if one of them activates the degaussing feature, it's either not labelled or its there, but I don't understand the icons engraved onto there.

Just in case, I'll tell you the model number. It's a ADI MicroScan 5V (LM-1764 is the part number). I'll dive into it again tomorrow.

You need to look for a U which is an icon for magnet.

Okay, I've found the Degauss button. However, I'm not touching it yet as I don't really want to risk anything. I know it sounds stupid, but I haven't dealt with a CRT since... 2010, I'd say. Also, I don't think it's normal to hear a crackling noise when the monitor's just been powered off by it's button, is it? All is going well for now, as I've put it in a place where it might get some actual use. I'm just wondering why it crackles after being immediately powered off...

That's just static electricity dissipating. I grew up with them it will not tear a hole in the universe. It won't implode. It won't explode.

Okay, so, 50 years later, I degaussed it, and it’s not looking any different. I’m going to try the 20-minute trick where you degauss, leave it powered off for 20 minutes to let the coils cool down, and try again. If this doesn’t work, I’m guessing it’s a focus problem.
