I've heard that because of refresh issues, LCD's aren't good as good at gaming as CRT's.

I am trying to decide between a 21 inch CRT and a 19 inch LCD. Can someone give me the pros and cons from a gamer's point of view? I am using an LCD to type this message, and there's just something that doesn't seem as "crisp" compared to CRT's...

Thanks in advance.

LCDs have a fixed resolution. Most 17" & 19" LCDs are 1280x1024 resolution. Lower resolution display modes are 'blown up' so each pixel as sent is 1.2 or so true pixels on the display (1024x768 or 800x600 are most commonly used ATM), so it seems less crisp because of that. (that's a bad explanation, but you're seeing it right now - change your display resolution to the maximum you can and you'll see the true resolution of the monitor)

CRTs show you precisely the resolution you selected because they're an analog device.

LCDs are getting better for games. The newest ones are to the point where ghosting is almost gone. However it seems that LCDs are more specialized - you can get an LCD that works good for games, but its crap for displaying videos, or vice-versa. I don't follow it too closely, but I haven't found one that's good for both.

CRTs are big and heavy.

LCDs are lighter and smaller.

CRTs are usually less expensive (but 21" CRT to 19" LCD is pretty close in price... 19" CRT is less expensive).

If you want to game at, say 1600x1200 resolution, you're stuck with CRT. If 1280x1024 is ok for gaming (it works ok for me), then LCD will work.

Check out the display reviews here at Toms. That's one thing they're still pretty good at, and they really put a monitor through its paces.

Mike.
