So, I buy a broken IBM CRT for a somewhat cheap price. Gut it's parts out (including the glass)

All that's left is a hollow plastic/metal/whatever shell of the monitor. If I were to custom-order a glass window for the panel, and just put an LCD behind it.. Wouldn't it just be an LCD in a CRT's shell?

I ask this because I don't have the money for a BRAND NEW CRT. and I refuse to buy a used CRT as you never know how much those have left before burning out. I understand getting custom glass is going to be a pain, but at least then I'll have a monitor that's both guaranteed to look nice for a long time and still has the nice look of the monitor it was in its prime.

NOTE: I do not wish to have the feel of the CRT, I know it looks and feels amazing but I just don't have the money for one that's new-old-stock
Even then, coming across one is extremely difficult these days...

I think the first thing you should worry about is finding an LCD panel that fits in the front frame without gaps and without too much "overscan" (I know it doesn't apply here, but I cant' think of a better term). There's no point in having a LCD in a CRT if there's noticeable panel gaps, IMO.
