is there any difference between this 2 ram for overclocking? is 8500 model going outperform the 6400 model?

All the PC2 8500 really is is pre-overclocked PC2 6400 Ram. Thats why you see under CPU-Z it shows PC2 6400, but if your into overclocking then I would say get the PC2 8500 Ram. Don't buy PC2 6400 Ram and then deside after that you now want to OC. NewEgg has the Crucial Ballistix PC2 8500 2x1GB Ram kit for $159.99.

Yes, it will perform the same at 1066 speed of course, but the 8500 will have slightly higher grade chips, which will allow it to reach a higher maximum overclock.

Yes PC2 6400's can go as high as PC2 8500, but no all the time. Theres no way to know how well a pair of 6400's will overclock. By getting 8500's you know for a fact that you can at the very least run them at 1066MHz. Most of the time you can get between 1100MHz-1200MHz. I have two pairs of the Crucial Ballistix 8500 and both of them reach 1200MHz @2.2v. Remember that when overclocking that sometimes people can't get the OC that they wanted on there Ram, but don't realise that the motherboard might be the limiting factor and not the Ram.

The motherboard that I have is meant for OC'ing so most likely that will not limit my Ram. Also make sure the power supply that you get is clean and very stable as well. Take advantage of the price drops now as the 8500's three months ago went for $379.99. Now their $159.99. Toss a coin, heads 6400 or tails 8500 there both great Ram!

i got my pair of 8500 for 80 and pair of tracer 8500 for 140. that was a couple months ago when newegg had ridiculously low 2x1gb prices of 1066. however, ive never seen them swing any lower

No, that's CPU prices that are dropping, not ram... well worth 160 though, arguably the best overclocking ram in the world at the moment.

put it this way, in the UK I'm about to pay the equivalent of $170 for 2GB of the 6400. If you can get the 8500 for that price then I'd say snap it up!

I think they will not go any lower than they are right now. Just buy them and be done with it. You might end up being sorry that you didn't get them at their price now.
