I was on Crucial's website looking for memory for an 8400.

There are three types of memory listed as compatible 3200, 4200 and 5200.
What do these numbers represent? Also, is it necessary to match memory with
the existing memory in my machine? Finally, is it true that Windows will
only use 3GB of memory?

The 3200, 4200, and 5300 are PC3200, PC4200, and PC5300 types of memory.
Each is a different speed. The PC3200 runs at 400MHz, the PC4200 runs at
533MHz, and the PC5300 runs at 667MHz.

If you have 400MHz memory in your machine now and you buy and install
533MHz or 667MHz memory then the faster memory will only run as fast as the
slowest memory in your system so you would be spending more money for
basically nothing unless you removed the 400MHz memory from your system
first.

There are 4 slots in your 8400 and to get the most out of the DDR2 you
should install the same size and speed memory in the 1 and 3 slots and then
the same type and speed in the 2 and 4 slots. For example:

Slot 1 - 256MB 400MHz
Slot 2 - 512MB 400MHz
Slot 3 - 256MB 400MHz
Slot 4 - 512MB 400MHz

This would give you 1.5GB of 400MHz RAM. Now, as I understand it, you can
install non-matching pairs but then the DDR2 won't work and you will suffer
a performance reduction, but I don't think it would be that noticeable. If
I'm wrong here, I'm sure someone will correct me. :)

I believe it's 4GB of RAM.
