Crucial Mx100 256GB vs Crucial M550 256GB vs Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

Hi

I was planning on buying a new SSD for my old notebook, the HDD of 500GB that is in my notebook now is so old that it doesn't work properly anymore.

I was doubting between the Crucial Mx100 256GB, the Crucial M550 256GB and the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.

What is the best choice in your opinion?

Samsung 840EVO 250GB, although it is pricier of the lot I think, still better than the other 2 listed.

Am using a 850 Pro 128GB on an old MacBook, the results are phenomenal!

Samsung 840 evo!

I hate using computers with mechanical drives now. Its like being on dialup internet after having fast broadband.

840 evo is hardly top end!
850 Pro on the other hand...

Whichever one fits your budget best.
All those are decent drives. The Evo has rapid mode which might be of benefit to you if you have the extra ram for it to cache the ssd with.
The evo may also have a longer warranty period but I'm not sure of that.

The mx100 I think is newer than the 550. It performs pretty well for the price. People tend to prefer the samsung evo's but they're a little more. Also I think the evo 850's are out now.

Go Samsung here, or risk sub par (sub HDD) performance. Check the net for performance. You'll see what you risk if you choose the cheaper solution (its a crap-shoot).

I don't think it's quite as dismal as samsung or get sub hdd speeds. In some performance tests the mx100 outperforms the same sized 840 evo. The 840 evo does perform a little better overall, but is usually pricier. The evo is currently going for around $10 more than the mx100 which makes it a better value. It just depends on when the sales are. When I caught the ocz vector 150 240gb for $60 on sale I grabbed it. The evo does have 62% faster random read than the vector, but the vector is pretty much faster at everything else by 30-60% netting it better performance than the samsung in both real user bench's and lab bench's. The only place samsung fared better was value since it's usually cheaper, but it was half of what a samsung runs when I grabbed it so it beat samsung out there too. Not saying samsung's are bad, that would be a dumb thing to say. They aren't the end all be all of ssd's though. Ocz makes some nice drives since toshiba picked them up, intel ssd's like the 730 series are also strong performers.

It comes down to choosing between the best of what's in your budget and taking advantage of specials. Going back to the original question between just the drives the op mentioned, given current pricing the evo is the better choice.
