I've got an XFX 4870, single slot. If I run Crysis, the game freezes up, blank screen with garbled sound, or simply crashes back to desktop. Occassional artefacts before crashing. Is it worth changing the case for aa Coolermaster HAD 922 or something? Or is it just a Crysis specific problem? It idles at 60-70. Hit 86 just before Crysis crashed. Does 73-78 in GTAIV. With the side of case open, Crysis toodles along at 67.
GTAIV- 1024*768, Texture - High, Render- Highest. Draw distance- 58, Detail distance- 100, Vehicle density- 100, Shadow density- 16.

Crysis- 1024*768, Very High, 4x AA, 16x AF (forced via CCC).

The 4870 does run hotter than you may think - but I agree with the others in that you appear to have a heat issue. It should run at 100C all day long. Whats the temo of the VRM's? You do want those to stay under 100C. Take the side off and see what you run at.

Also, set the fan to 75% before you go into the game and watch your temps.

My 4870x2 would kick on the fan just before it would crash, running it manually kept it playable.

Good Luck

sometimes it is just because overclocking card. if you did than just go with default clocks and try that. and like everybody says just go to ati control panel and set to 100% fan

What about this? I need the graphics card to last at least 3 years, preferably 4, by which time if it goes kerplunk I could convince my dad to replace it.
Once again, Crysis uses 100% fan, the rest uses auto. The highest I've seen it go on auto is on Burnout- Paradise. 1024, 4xAA, 16xAF, 78, 47% fan. Crysis usually gets 78-80 at 1024, very high, DX10, 4xAA, ATI AAA on high, 16x AF.
With the side off, it idles at 49, fan off, and with Crysis, same settings as above, 68.
Side off not an option. Own a dog. A pug. ah heck sheds fur all over the place. My old P4 workhorse, which I replaced with my current rig last month, had the side off all the time. Net result- the GeForce 5500 would (according to speed fan) idle ar 78 due to fur and dust cloggint the heat sink. My proccy would do the high 60's with nothing running. I would continually get artefacts and corrupted polygons. No amount of cleaning could fix it.

Why are you using a 4870 on 1024x768 resolution? What's your monitor's size/type?

And yeah like some said the 4870 can take the heat. 70-80c loaded is nothing for the 4870 and for a lot of people is normal. I wouldn't worry until I saw 90c and above.

What I wanna know is if running it under 100% fan for an hour or two a day, four or five days a week, for the duration of two months (he time it will take me to complete Crysis and Warhead) will drastically reduce the fan's life expectancy. I dont forsee upgrading till 2013 at least.

Have you ever cleaned the heatsink and fan???Try to open the heat sink and blow all the dust using a brush and a vacuum cleaner....also clean the fan gently without disturbing the balance....If you are afraid to do so then report it the problem to the manufacturer of the card....They should replace the card if there is any such heating issue...

(sigh) you dont read do you? The dust and fur problem was with my OLD rig, a p4, 256 ram, a gf 5500. My new rig has no probs, cpet overheating on Crysis at max detail. What I want to know is if running the fan on at 100 for one hour a day for two months will damage it. My machine is turned on for like 2-3 hours a day max.

Certainly it will damage your fan...The fan itself will overheat and burn its coil if you run it under 100% for 2-3hrs....What psu are you using???It should provide at least 25amps on its 12v rails!!!Sometimes due to power shortage you get such problems!!!Since crysis is the game which pushes both cpu and gpu to their limits you might face a shortage of power!!!

Coolermaster Xtreme Power 600W.
I dont think its a lack of power. With the GPU fan on auto, according to GPU-Z it hits 86 before shutting off. Just before shut off, I get aretefacts (white dots). Does that not indicate overheating? And I've often run Crysis for 2-2 1/2 hours continuous. There doesnt seem to be any problem....

Yes 86C is quite abnormal for a 4870 even under full load...Even your idle temperatures are also high...So,I would suggest you to hand over the card to your manufacturer!!They will replace it if it is within the warranty, given that you have not fried anything due to OCing etc
