CS & GF 5900XT problem

Installed a new nVidia GF5900XT 128Mb graphics card on a AMD 1.7 system with
512Mb RAM & XP Pro SP2. Installed & ran Steam and set the graphics to D3D in
the setup options and then it all went wrong. I have uninstalled both Steam
& drivers & re-installed, checked for updates etc but that setting seems to
be persistant. The Steam screens are fine up to the 'New Game, Find Servers,
Options, Quit' screen. That's where the problems start with a totally mesed
up screen. The options are there if you happen to click in the right place.

I have a similar system to you in most respects:

512mb 333mhz ddr ram
phatmooma GB HDD
xp2100 oc'd a bit
gf 5 5900 (not xt)
win2k sp4

First try switching to opengl for cs, I dont recall ever seeing D3D working
properly on any card I have tried with HL / CS (this goes back to TNT1 /
Voodoo times etc).

HL2 one is strange, unlikey to be connected to your problem with CS (that
will depend whether you get opengl to work).

Check your voltages on your PSU in bios as well.

Have you checked the forums at www.steampowered.com there are loads of
people with loads of HL2 related issues there

i'll look at the forums and see.

Update: I used the overclocking settings and nudged a clock rate up by about
5%. This allowed the talking head to go on for a few more seconds before
doing the reset.

The D3D setting was a slip of the mouse unfortunately compounded by poor
brain-mouse co-ordination.

I put my old 64Mb Kyro 4500 card back in and CS works fine again and HL2
works, though non too quickly or highly spec'ed. I don't think I mentioned
that the mobo is AGP x 4 and the new card is AGP x 8 but I always thought
they were backwardly compatible to some degree. I did change the BIOS AGP
aperture from 64Mb to 128Mb to reflect the increase in MB size. Both card &
mobo are MSI.
